ICT Level 1



This qualification aims to allow learners to work confidently, effectively and independently in life, by developing practical skills in ICT which can then be transferred across situations and contexts.

It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications, including Apprenticeships.

This qualification is suitable for learners aiming to progress to Functional Skills ICT – Level 2.



To be awarded the Functional Skills qualification in ICT at Level 1, learners are required to successfully complete one mandatory unit: Information and Communication Technology.

This qualification has a set of performance standards based on three key areas:

  • Use of ICT systems;
  • Finding and selecting information;
  • Developing, presenting and communicating information.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for ICT Level 1.  All candidates will take an initial Skills Assessment and Diagnostic test (online or paper- based) to assess the appropriate level of entry.

Learners registered on these qualifications shouldn’t undertake another qualification at the same time with the same or a similar title, as duplication of learning may affect funding eligibility.


Units and Assessment

To be awarded the Functional Skills qualification in mathematics learners are required to successfully complete the mandatory component by achieving either a:

  • Written test;
  • Multiple choice test (online, using the e-volve system).

Test duration and permitted materials

The duration of this test is 2hrs (reference material is not permitted).
